Countless people supported my effort on this essay. Professors Elizabeth Blackmar and Mark Mazower provided invaluable feedback on my analysis and framing, at times responding to emails late at night and early in the morning. Her course on Bombay and its Urban Imaginaries led me to Columbia University’s UNRRA Papers, and her encouragement to write this thesis made me confident that the topic was worthy of my investigation—and that my investigation was worthy of the topic.
