This paper and the research behind it would not have been possible without the exceptional support of my supervisor, Lawrence Magister. His enthusiasm, knowledge and exacting attention to detail have been an inspiration and kept my work on track from my first encounter with the logbooks of British Naval Ships MS VII.2.77 to the final draft of this paper.

Margaret Kempis and Matthew Brown, my colleagues at Western University, have also looked over my transcriptions and answered with unfailing patience numerous questions about the language and hands of British Naval Ships MS VII.2.77. Samantha McKenzie, head librarian of the Southern Region Central Collegiate Library Special Collections and Microfilms Department where British Naval Ships MS VII.2.77 currently resides, not only provided colour images of the manuscript overnight but unexpectedly shared the invaluable information on the book that she has been gathering for almost twenty years.

I am also grateful for the insightful comments offered by the anonymous peer reviewers at Books & Texts. The generosity and expertise of one and all have improved this study in innumerable ways and saved me from many errors; those that inevitably remain are entirely my own responsibility.

The data presented and analyzed in this report were collected during three tours of research in a large village of Hausa-speaking people near Madaoua, Republique du Niger.

The first research, conducted between January 1968 and March 1969, was supported by a predoctoral fellowship and training grant from the United States National Institute of Mental Health. The second tour of research in December 1973 and January 1974 was underwritten by The Population Council; and the most recent field investigation during June 1975 was funded by the Research Council of the Graduate School at the University of Massachusetts/Amherst through a faculty research grant.
I gratefully acknowledge the generous support of these agencies. Suzi and Edmond Bernus, Michael Horowitz, Guy Nicuias, Marc Piault, and Jean Rouch facilitated my first entry to the field and the selection of a field site. Dioulde Laya, director of the Institut de Recherche en Sciences Humaines, ~niversit; de Niamey, helped
in obtaining my research authorizations and repeatedly offered encouragement’ and support. Jerome Barkow, Lydia Black, Michael Krasnow, Harriet Lyons, Nancy Munn, and Harold Olofson gave invaluable comments on earlier drafts of this monograph. My heartfelt thanks goes to each individual.

My hosts, the people of Tudu in the arrondissement of Madaoua,~Gubli~ue du Niger, patiently endured my many questions and generously shared their understandings, joys, and tragedies. I am particularly grateful to Abdu ‘dan Umma, a diviner and healer in Tudu, who instructed me in the many intricacies of Hausa spirit belief, and to age” ‘dan ~alle who taught me the framework of local social organization.
